Oregon Lottery® Scratch-itSM for Schools Passes $1 Million Mark
2009 schools’ tally tops $100,000Salem, Ore., (Apr. 21, 2009) The 2009 Oregon Lottery® Scratch-itSM for Schools events began April 1 in Salem and culminated with the final event in Pendleton on April 16. During Scratch-it for Schools’ five other stops in Bend, Eugene, Medford, and Klamath Falls, the 75 public schools participating in this year’s events won over $100,000.
Since the Scratch-it for Schools program was launched in 1996, schools taking part during that 13-year history have now won over $1 million. “Given the current state of the economy, the Lottery is very happy to be able to provide these added dollars to the schools,” said Lottery Director Dale Penn. “The schools can utilize their Scratch-it for Schools winnings in any way they wish. Over the years, schools have used those dollars for everything from field trips to playground equipment to upgrading technology at their schools.”
At each of the statewide events, two adults from each of the schools were partnered with two other adults from local TV and radio stations, as well as newspapers, to form a four-person team. All four team members scratched as many Scratch-it tickets as they could during a set amount of time. When the countdown clock ran out, teams sorted the tickets they had scratched and then were able to keep the cash prizes for the school they represented.
All Oregon public schools were invited to enter the drawing to select participating schools for the 2009 Scratch-it for Schools. From the schools that entered, 75 schools were drawn to participate.
Since the Oregon Lottery began selling tickets on April 25, 1985, it has funded over $4 billion for public education. In total the Lottery has earned over $6.4 billion for public education, state parks, watershed enhancements and economic development combined.
